English evidence for Subclass 500: 2026 accepted tests and waivers

One-line direct answer

Subclass 500 requires IELTS 5.5 overall (for foundation programs) or 6.0 (for direct bachelor’s/master’s entry); PTE, TOEFL, and Cambridge exams are accepted equivalents, and waivers are available for SPM English A, 5+ years of English-medium study, or degrees from English-speaking countries.

IELTS scores and band requirements

The International English Language Test (IELTS) is the most common English-language proof for Australian student visas. Home Affairs sets a minimum of:

What “overall” means: Your four component scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) are averaged to produce an overall band. An overall of 6.0 does not require all four components to be 6.0; they can be 5.5–6.5 as long as the average is 6.0.

Example 1: You score Listening 6.5, Reading 6.0, Writing 5.5, Speaking 6.0. Your overall is (6.5 + 6.0 + 5.5 + 6.0) ÷ 4 = 6.0. This meets the bachelor’s requirement.

Example 2: You score Listening 5.5, Reading 5.0, Writing 5.5, Speaking 5.0. Your overall is (5.5 + 5.0 + 5.5 + 5.0) ÷ 4 = 5.25. This does not meet the foundation requirement (5.5 overall). You cannot use this score.

Retaking IELTS: You can retake IELTS as many times as needed. Each test costs approximately AUD 300–350 (MYR 870–1,015). IELTS results are valid for 2 years.

PTE, TOEFL, Cambridge, and other equivalents

Home Affairs accepts other English-language tests as equivalent to IELTS. As of 2025, the accepted tests are:

TOEFL iBT (Internet-based):

Cambridge English Qualifications:

English-language waivers and exemptions

You do NOT need to sit an English test if you meet one of these conditions:

1. SPM English A or equivalent: If your SPM English language result is an A (or equivalent Distinction/Grade 1), you’re exempt from providing IELTS. Provide your SPM statement of results or school certification letter. This is one of the easiest waivers for Malaysian students.

2. Five or more consecutive years of study in English medium: If you studied full-time in an English-medium school or university for 5+ consecutive years immediately before your application, you’re exempt. “English medium” means all or most subjects are taught in English.

Example: You completed STPM (2 years) + A-Levels (2 years) + 1 year of university in an English-medium institution = 5 years. You don’t need IELTS.

This requires evidence (school transcripts, university enrolment letters, or a letter from your institution confirming the language of instruction).

3. Citizen of an English-speaking country: If you hold citizenship of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, UK, or Ireland, you’re exempt. Citizenship certificate or passport is sufficient.

4. Degree from an English-speaking country: If you hold a bachelor’s or higher degree from an Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, American, British, or Irish university, you’re exempt. Degree certificate and transcript are required.

5. Previous Australian study: If you studied in Australia on a previous student visa and were granted the visa after an IELTS test, you may be exempt from re-testing if your new course is at the same level or higher. Provide evidence of your previous visa grant notice showing you met the English requirement.

How to submit English evidence to Home Affairs

When you lodge your Subclass 500 application, include your English-language proof in the online form or attach it to your document checklist:

For other tests (PTE, TOEFL, etc.):

For waivers:

Common mistakes:

Test preparation and timing

When to sit the test: If you don’t qualify for a waiver, sit your IELTS (or equivalent) at least 8–12 weeks before you plan to lodge your student visa application. This allows time for score reporting and incorporation into your visa file.

Where to sit IELTS in Malaysia:

Preparation:

Typical study duration: 6–12 weeks if you’re targeting a score you’re confident about; 3–6 months if you’re improving from a borderline score.

Malaysian pathway

SPM students with an A in SPM English are exempt from IELTS. Check your SPM statement of results to confirm the grade. If you have an A, include it in your application and don’t sit IELTS. If you have a B or lower, you’ll need to sit IELTS (typically 5.5 for a foundation program).

STPM students completing STPM in English medium have likely studied 5+ years in English (secondary school + STPM), and may claim the 5-year waiver. Provide your school and STPM enrolment letters confirming English-medium instruction. If uncertain, sit IELTS as backup (6.0 for direct bachelor’s entry).

A-Level or UEC students similarly may claim the 5-year waiver if they’ve studied in English medium. A-Level students studied in English medium almost by definition (A-Levels are taught in English). UEC students should confirm their secondary school was English-medium.

Diploma holders transitioning to a postgraduate degree: If your Diploma was in Malaysia at an English-medium institution, you may claim the 5-year waiver if the Diploma was part of your 5-year English-medium education journey (e.g. 3 years secondary + 2 years Diploma). Otherwise, sit IELTS (6.0 for master’s entry).

International school students (e.g. those who attended St. John’s Kuala Lumpur or Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar) are 100% exempt; international schools teach in English, and Home Affairs recognises this. Include your school transcripts.

Common questions

Do I need to meet the English requirement before I apply for a Subclass 500? Yes. You must provide English-language evidence with your visa application. Home Affairs assesses this before granting the visa. You cannot say “I’ll provide IELTS results later.”

If I don’t meet the IELTS requirement, can I still apply with a conditional enrolment? No. You must meet the English requirement before your visa is granted. However, some universities offer conditional enrolment letters stating you’ll enroll in an intensive English language program (ELP) before your main degree. Home Affairs may accept this conditional arrangement and grant your 500 on the condition you complete the ELP. Check with your university.

How much does IELTS cost in Malaysia in 2025? Approximately MYR 900–1,100 (AUD 310–380). Prices vary by test centre. Book early, as peak seasons (before Australian semester starts) fill quickly.

If I score IELTS 6.5, do I get any advantage in my visa application? Not formally. Home Affairs only cares if you meet the minimum (6.0 for bachelor’s). A 6.5 doesn’t speed up visa processing or give bonus points. However, a higher IELTS may help with university admission (for postgraduate scholarships or course placement) and later PR applications.

Can I use an IELTS score from 3 years ago? No. IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. A score older than 2 years is not accepted by Home Affairs. You’ll need to retake the test.

If my STPM was in English medium, do I need to provide proof of the 5-year waiver? Yes. Even though STPM is taught in English at government schools, you should provide your STPM enrolment letter or transcript noting “English medium.” Include secondary school transcripts if possible to show the full 5-year pathway.
