PTE, TOEFL, and other English tests accepted for Australian universities

One-line direct answer

Australian universities accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English Advanced, and OET as alternatives to IELTS; PTE is fastest (3-day results, cost AUD ~200), TOEFL iBT requires ~2–3 weeks for results, and both are accepted by the Department of Home Affairs for student visas.

Why alternative English tests exist

IELTS is the most commonly taken English test in Malaysia and is the default choice for study-abroad applications. However, alternative English-proficiency tests exist because:

  1. Test availability and speed: PTE Academic is available online and delivers results within 3 days, compared to IELTS’s 13-day turnaround
  2. Test format preference: Some test-takers find PTE’s computer-based format less stressful than IELTS’s paper/speaking-interview format
  3. Cost and accessibility: In some regions, alternative tests may be cheaper or available more frequently
  4. Visa and professional recognition: All four tests listed below are officially recognised by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for student visa purposes

Recommendation for most Malaysian students: If time is not a constraint, IELTS is the safest choice due to universal recognition and abundance of preparation resources in Malaysia. If you need fast results, PTE is the best alternative (3-day turnaround, low cost, full Australian and visa acceptance).

Common questions

Q: If I take PTE and then later need IELTS, do I have to retake a test?
A: No. Australian universities accept any of the four tests at equivalent score levels. Once you have a valid score (PTE 61+, TOEFL 90+, etc.), you do not need to retake IELTS.

Q: Can I use a PTE score for my student visa application?
A: Yes. The Department of Home Affairs accepts PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge Advanced, and OET as equivalent to IELTS for student visa purposes (Subclass 500).

Q: Is PTE easier or harder than IELTS?
A: Difficulty is subjective. PTE’s automated speaking assessment can be easier for some (no human anxiety) but harder for others (less feedback on pronunciation). The content is similarly challenging. Choose based on format preference and speed/cost considerations.

Q: If my TOEFL score is TOEFL 90, what is my IELTS equivalent?
A: TOEFL 90 ≈ IELTS 6.5. Use the conversion tables above for other scores. However, note that conversions are approximate; each university may have its own conversion methodology.

Q: How long is my PTE score valid for?
A: PTE scores are valid for 2 years, the same as IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge. After 2 years, you must retake the test if you wish to apply for visa or further study.

Q: Can I take the TOEFL Essentials (shorter version) for Australian university admission?
A: Check with your target university. Some universities accept TOEFL Essentials; others require the full TOEFL iBT. Confirm before booking the Essentials test.
